Mother Bernard House

Welcome to Mother Bernard House, located in downtown Eureka, California. We offer 42 efficiency apartments with on-site supportive services for persons experiencing homelessness. Six recuperative care units, also located on site, provide a short-term stay for patients being discharged from St. Joseph Hospital who need medical or healthcare follow-up and supportive services to prepare them for permanent supportive housing.

Residents and recuperative care participants have access to a community room and kitchen as well as outdoor gathering spaces. Everyone is encouraged to participate in on-site services and activities designed to develop community and mutual support.

In order to submit an application for housing at Mother Bernard House, you must meet the following initial eligibility requirements. Other eligibility criteria for housing will be by the housing authority.

  • At the time of application, the head of household, spouse or co-head of household must be 18 years of age or older, verified as currently or chronically homeless, and enrolled in or eligible for Medi-Cal.
  • Maximum household size: one or two persons dependent on floor plan.
  • Applicants must provide their social security card, government issued identification and birth certificate at the time of application.
  • Your household income must be at or below 30% of the area median income for Humboldt County, CA. HUD income limits as of September 8th, 2023, are as follows:
    • 1-Person Household: $17,350
    • 2-Person Household: $19,800

Please note that the local housing authority will run a tenant screening report. There is no charge to applicants for running the report. Please review the Tenant Selection Plan for further eligibility requirements that may impact eligibility for housing.

Mother Bernard House is made up of a central courtyard surrounded by three separate buildings. We have 42 units of permanent supportive housing and 6 units reserved for recuperative care. Our amenities include a community room, secured mailboxes, bike storage, on-site laundry, and a central courtyard.

To be considered for housing at Mother Bernard House, you must be entered into The Coordinated Entry System (CES). CES is a HUD-requirement used to prioritize households for HUD-funded housing assistance for people experiencing homelessness. Prioritization in this real-time list is based on length of time homeless and severity of service needs. Once entered into CES, the CES Prioritization Committee determines who meets criteria to be referred to Mother Bernard House.
