Welcome to Providence House Oakland, a diverse and vibrant apartment community in the Uptown neighborhood. Our 34 one-bedroom and 6 two-bedroom apartments were designed and built especially for households with a disabled member.

Founded in 1991, Providence House is a well-designed, beautifully maintained, HUD-subsidized housing program. In addition to providing tenants with a safe place to home in a vibrant community, we also provide services coordination to help residents find and access local resources and services.

In order to submit an application for housing at Providence House Oakland, you must meet the following initial eligibility requirements. Other eligibility criteria for housing will be verified when an application reaches the top of the wait list (e.g. criminal background check, student status, etc.).

  • At the time of application, the head of household, spouse or co-head of household must be 18 years of age or older with a verifiable disability*
  • Maximum household size for a one-bedroom apartment is 2 persons
  • Minimum household size for a two-bedroom apartment is 2 persons, and maximum is 4 persons
  • Applicants must disclose their social security numbers at the time of application, and will be required to provide documentation during the initial eligibility process
  • Household income must be at or below HUD’s financial criteria for receiving rental assistance, which is 50% of the Area Median Income for Alameda County, CA. HUD income limits as of June 25th, 2021 are as follows:
    • 1-Person Household: $47,950
    • 2-Person Household: $54,800
    • 3-Person Household: $61,650
    • 4-Person Household: $68,500

*Please note that at Providence House Oakland, applicants may qualify for priority placement on the waitlist if they qualify for one or more specific preferences, which must be verifiable. Applicants whose income is below 30% of the Area Median Income, who are homeless, are paying more than 50% of their income for rent, or are in danger of being involuntarily displaced, or who have disabling HIV or AIDS receive preference on the waitlist. Those who meet all three preferences are placed above those that meet two, one or none of the preferences. Please review the Tenant Selection Plan for further information.

Every apartment in our four-story building is wheelchair accessible and comes with all the comforts of home. We have 34 one-bedroom and 6 two-bedroom apartments and our secure building has an elevator.

Some of our one- and two-bedroom apartments are designed with roll in showers for applicants/residents who require that feature. All units have grab bars in the bathroom.

All units and common areas have strobes and horns for fire alarm, and applicants/tenants with hearing impairment can request strobe-light doorbells.

One small pet is allowed with a pet deposit.

Our well-maintained landscaping and a community garden provide respite from the urban surroundings, and a patio offers residents the opportunity enjoy the outdoors with the benefit of a lush, green hedge providing privacy from the street.

Activities

We provide a mix of recreational and educational programming for our residents. We offer a weekly art class, bimonthly neighborhood meetings and various luncheons and holiday celebrations throughout the year.

Getting started

Interested in living at Oakland Providence House? Follow these steps to check your eligibility, review some important information about applying for and living in HUD subsidized housing and complete your application.

Completed applications must be printed, signed and mailed to the management office of the House(s) you’re applying to. Applicants who appear to meet all eligibility requirements will be added to the wait list and will be contacted when their application nears the top.

Now you’re ready to complete your application materials. Please review these materials carefully and complete all sections of the application and attached documents. Incomplete applications will be returned to you, causing a delay in adding your application to the wait list. If you have any questions while you are completing these materials, please contact the management office.

If your phone number or address changes, or you have a change in household composition, income, or other circumstances that may affect your application, you must contact the office to update information on your application.

Located in Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood, Providence House is just two blocks away from major bus lines and seven blocks away from a BART station. You’ll have easy access to grocery stores including a Grocery Outlet half a mile away and a specialty ethnic grocery store down the block.

When it comes to your health and wellness, the Alta Bates Summit Hospital and Medical center is one mile away, a neighborhood pharmacy is two blocks away and there are a few national pharmacy stores within one mile.

Located in the heart of Oakland’s art scene, we are close to many attractions and entertainment options. The Oakland Art Murmur and Oakland’s First Fridays are both half a block away and we are just blocks from the Fox Theater and the Paramount Theater. In addition, Jack London Square, Lake Merritt and the Oakland Museum of California are all within two miles.

There are several places of worship within walking distance or a short bus ride of our apartments. Both the Downtown Oakland Senior Center and a Social Security Office are half a mile away, there is a U.S. Post Office one mile away and the Oakland Main Library is a little over a mile away.
